SASIENI Mayfair 51

England, 1950-70s

A nice example of the pipe making art from Sasieni – one of the most aggressive and active competitors of Dunhill for many years. The family business successfully worked till 1979 – until the recession of demand in pipes forced to sell the business to new investors, and interest in Sasieni among collectors has gone down significantly. In our case it is the Mayfair apple shaped pipe still from the “Alfred era” (made before 1979), a very pleasant finding both for collectors and just experienced & demanding smokers.

The pipe markings are “Sasieni \ MAYFAIR \ LONDON MADE”, “MADE IN ENGLAND”, “51”. The length is 13.7 cm (5.39″), bowl’s height is 4.0 cm (1.57″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.7 cm (1.46″), internal diameter is 1.8 cm (0.71″). The depth is 3.0 cm (1.18″) and this pipe weights 33 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. The air hole drilling looks a bit off center, perhaps therefore the pipe wasn’t graded as a “Four dot Sasieni”, but of course it still fitted quality control requirements on the factory.

I have an old Sasieni pipe that I am trying to date. I am new to this site and not sure where to start – hope you can help. The bit has a fancy “S” inside of a shield and the nomenclature on the shank read “London Made” “Canadian By Sasieni” and “Made in England”. Any help would be great – thanks!

      Hi Dutch,

if there’s no Patent Nr, the pipe is the most probably from the late 1950s-1970s. If you send some pictures of the pipe and its stamping, we could check it additionally.

Also you may look through the Sasieni article at Pipedia: https://pipedia.org/wiki/Sasieni

      The best wishes for Christmas!
