JOHN REDMAN Golden Square dublin

England

The pipe named after a very nice London place – the Golden Square located between the Upper John and Lower John streets in the city center. The most of the Redman pipes bear such topological signs and of course the popular middle range series was highly appreciated by consumers both due to smoking qualities and due to English people’s unsurpassed patriotism and pride in their homeland.

Another interesting detail. This is already not the first Redman’s pipe marked “expressly for Pogues” which arrived to us from USA. It seems a batch of pipes was produced especially for an American tobacconist and of course they were specially stamped for the reseller. What a nice example of the international cooperation!

The pipe markings are “GOLDEN SQUARE \ LONDON MADE”, “MADE IN ENGL…”, “EXPRESSLY FOR POGUES”. The length is 14.8 cm (5.83″), bowl’s height is 4.5 cm (1.77″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.2 cm (1.26″), internal diameter is 1.9 cm (0.75″). The depth is 3.7 cm (1.46″) and this pipe weights 27 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem (a little bit corrected, you may see the track under a bright light), no filter. The shank had a small neat crack which was carefully fixed and clamped by a collar for maximal reliability.

England A pretty nice, moderately smoked and unusually balanced Redman’s middle size and middle grade billiard approximately from 1960-70’s. The shape with such a proportion of the stummel and the stem looks a bit provocative, but in fact many Redman pipes were made in very provocative shapes and finishes at that time.

England Apparently, in this way the craftsman from John Redman’s pipe factory in London is hinting that he has long wanted to go on holiday, preferably somewhere exotic. Jokes aside, the Canberra series was unique in its own way, capable of encompassing both restrained, classic pieces and rather free-spirited creations – from unexpected freehand designs,…

England, 1930-50s This is the oldest (so far) John Redman pipe we have in our private collection. We’ve mentioned recently the issues with the briar supply which were experienced by English pipe makers since the beginning of the 1960s. This shortage caused by political situation in Algeria affected Dunhill (you may be interested to look…

England We have a suspicion that the pipe was born in 1979 when a carver saw the “Alien” movie for the first time. Of course, it’s a joke, but the pipe’s shape is extraterrestrial indeed. By the way, we have met a Sasieni one of the same shape recently.
