JOHN REDMAN Extra 40

JOHN REDMAN Extra 40

England

A very pleasant Redman’s bulldog pipe, most likely of 1970-80s years of birth. In any case the  series isn’t registered neither in earlier catalogues available to us, nor in other sources. Very probably, it was ordered by one of contractors; therefore it bears quite an unusual for John Redman model and the shape number.

The pipe markings are “JOHN REDMAN / LONDON MADE”, “EXTRA”, “40”. The length is 14.3 cm (5.98″) and the bowl’s height is 4.1 cm (1.89″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.7 cm (1.46″), internal diameter is 1.8 cm (0.79″). The depth is 3.1 cm (1.61″) and this pipe weighs 32 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

England A very interesting finding: the Brixton series is not represented in available Redman’s catalogues. The pipe was made in the 1960-70s the most probably: the stamping “John Redman” (in script) is not typical for early Redman products. Also we’d like to draw your attention to the shape: it’s not a simple bent pipe, but…

England A pretty nice, moderately smoked and unusually balanced Redman’s middle size and middle grade billiard approximately from 1960-70’s. The shape with such a proportion of the stummel and the stem looks a bit provocative, but in fact many Redman pipes were made in very provocative shapes and finishes at that time.

England, 1930-50s This is the oldest (so far) John Redman pipe we have in our private collection. We’ve mentioned recently the issues with the briar supply which were experienced by English pipe makers since the beginning of the 1960s. This shortage caused by political situation in Algeria affected Dunhill (you may be interested to look…

  • JOHN REDMAN Aristocrat Superman

England Judging by its design features, this pipe, manufactured by the London-based John Redman company, reflects trends in the pipe-making world of the second half of the 20th century; we would date it to the 1960s or 1970s. Just as Charatan’s “Make Selected” is the second-highest grade after “Supreme”, Aristocrat pipes are positioned in the…

England Don’t get us wrong, but a well-chosen pipe mouthpiece—like a nice pair of shoes for a woman—highlights natural beauty, draws attention, and completely transforms the overall look. Even a plain, machine-made bowl will shine in a new light after the right mouthpiece upgrade. And all the more so if it’s a solid English pipe…
