Leon's Carlyle 416

Leon’s Carlyle 416

England

A pipe from our private collection purchased on the very beginning and pleasantly smoked until some larger and more expensive pipes arrived. The origin of the pipe is still not completely clear: the most of sources are not aware of this brand, Wilczak & Colwell directory refers either to J. Leon & Co Ltd or to Martin’s Ltd, both in UK (the last suggestion explains the encircled “M” symbol on the shank). This is for sure a nice lightweight English pipe and it’s made by a middle or large manufacturer which used own shape numbering system. Good smoker for reasonable money!

The pipe markings are “LEON’S \ CARLYLE”, “416”, “LONDON MADE”, “(M)”. The length is 13.5 cm (5.31″), bowl’s height is 4.0 cm (1.57″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.0 cm (1.18″), internal diameter is 1.7 cm (0.67″). The depth is 3.5 cm (1.38″) and this pipe weights 23 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. We have patched a chip on the backside of the bowl, you may identify the trace under a good light.

  • REJECT London Made

England A nicely made English pipe. The heavy bowled bent shape and cross cut grain look quite similar to Charatan’s products from 1960’s, but the pipe is just a beautiful item regardless its origin. And the dark spot on the bowl’s back doesn’t prevent a smoking pleasure.

  • Reject London Made

England There will be a number of pipes marked “Reject” in our collection. This mark doesn’t mean that the pipe is of a poor quality. Moreover the most of “rejects” are pipes from production lines of famous manufacturers rejected due to minor issues with a grain or a small cavern in wood. Such small defects…

  • Palm Pipe 2

England One of the mysterious pipes with the palm (hand) logo on the stem (it still visible on this pipe, but it’s a bit faded already). Our investigation brought us to the McGahey tobacconist in Exeter, UK. Some of such “palm” pipes were created or repaired by their carver and stamped with this logo. Unfortunately…

  • Made in England

England The stamping, finish and the shape of this pipe look very similar to pre-Cadogan Orlik products. But of course we don’t have enough information to proove that. Therefore let’s keep calling the pipe simply “Made in England”.
