CHARATAN'S MAKE Special 59

CHARATAN’S MAKE Special 59

England, 1950s

A very well preserved classical English lovat pipe made during the family, “pre-Lane” era. You may see that the shape number is located on the left side of the shank (from the smoker’s perspective) together with other stampings, what is typical for the Ruben era. So the pipe was made in 1950s, hardly much earlier: the Special series was more characteristic for the last “family” decade and the Lane period.

The pipe markings are “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON. ENGLAND \ SPECIAL”, “59”. The length is 11.0 cm (4.33″), bowl’s height is 3.3 cm (1.3″). External diameter of the bowl is  3.2 cm (1.26″),  internal diameter is 1.7 cm (0.67″). The depth is 2.9 cm (1.14″) and this pipe weights 22 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

Interesting that the pipe doesn’t have a shape number: the most probably because…

  • CHARATAN’S MAKE 91

England, 1950s The stem shape, deep “wild” sandblasted finish and the nomenclature say undoubtedly it’s the family era Charatan’s make pipe from the 1950s. Sandblasting machines were installed at Charatan’s factory after WWII, in the early 1950s most probably. Since the full sandblasting technology was patented by Alfred Dunhill, Charatan’s like many other manufacturers practiced…

  • (CHARATAN’S Make) unstamped

England The pipe has no stamping, but the patented DC (“double comfort”) stem, the unique shape, the almost ideal straight grain say undoubtedly it’s one of the higher grade Charatan’s (at least Distinction or Selected). The pipe was obtained together with a fantastic Colin Fromm pipe, very probably the pipe could be carved by this…

  • CHARATAN’S MAKE Distinction

The pipe has no shape number ,…
