CHARATAN’S MAKE Selected 47

England, 1950s

One of very high grade Charatans pipes made before Lane era, most probably in the 1950s. Charatan’s admirers know the highest grade was the “Supreme”. Another one of the highest grades, “Selected” level was the second from the top. Perhaps the most sophisticated and mind-blowing “Selected” pipes were made during the 1960-70s period. But in our case the shape number is placed on the same side with the “CHARATAN’S MAKE” stamping, what is typical for Reuben era, before the company was aquired by Lane ltd. That’s an amazing finding indeed!

The previous owner of the pipe wasn’t very careful with pipe: the right side of the shank (from the smokers perspective) got an external burn (in an ashtray?); the damaged area is concaved in and got some scratches. We have fixed this area additionally with a strong super glue to ensure the maximal reliability. Also we had to patch a few small dents on the bowl. Despite these cosmetic issuess the pipe is absolutely OK technically, full of life and ready to be smoked many and many years.

The pipe markings are “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON. ENGLAND \ SELECTED “, “47”. The length is 13.8 cm (5.43″), bowl’s height is 4.0 cm (1.57″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.9 cm (1.54″), internal diameter is 2.1 cm (0.83″). The depth is 3.3 cm (1.3″) and this pipe weights 37 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem (a bit patched, you may see the track under a bright light), no filter.
