MARXMAN Jumbo 4

MARXMAN Jumbo 4

USA, 1930s

The pipe comes to us with the 1930s collection, so it’s probably one of the early Marxmans – the company has been founded in 1934 by Robert (Bob) L. Marx, former William Demuth Company employee and merged with Mastercraft in 1953. Allthough the company didn’t use very expensive briar, very fast Marxman pipes become popular and collectable for their variety of carved and sculpted models – “Actors like Zachery Scott, Dennis Morgan, Jack Carson, Alan Hale, Joel McRae, and Ronald Reagan were some of the faces that appeared on the bowls”.

The pipe marking is “Jumbo \ FRENCH MADE \ 4”, “MARXMAN / IMPORTED BRIAR”(a bit difficult to read). The length is 15.0 cm (5.9″), bowl’s height is 4.1 cm (1.61″). External dimensions of the bowl are 3.9 x 3.6 cm (1.54 x 1.42″), internal diameter is 2.2 cm (0.87″). The depth is 3.2 cm (1.26″) and this pipe weights 40 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.
