CHARATAN'S MAKE Distinction De Luxe

CHARATAN’S MAKE Distinction De Luxe

England, 1960-70s

A really unique high grade Charatan’s pipe! The De Luxe grade was actually one of the family-era series and it wasn’t stamped onto Lane era Charatan’s pipes. The Distinction grade belongs already to the Lane period, more specificly – “the second Lane era” (1965-76) in this case, the stamping “MADE BY HAND” proofs that. However it’s the firsy of hundreds Charatan’s we’ve ever seen which bears both stamps – Distinction and De Luxe! Of course it’s the most probably a way to underline the pipe is a very special Distionction, perhaps made on a customer’s request or specificaton. Great distinct grain, unique shape, amazing condition (however the pipe isn’t a real sitter despite its shape)- sincerely recommended!

The pipe markings are “(L)”, “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON. ENGLAND \ DISTINCTION \ DE LUXE”, “MADE BY HAND \ EXTRA LARGE”. The length is 15.1 cm (5.94″), bowl’s height is 5.8 cm (2.28″). External diameter of the bowl is 4.6 cm (1.81″), internal diameter is 2.3 cm (0.9″). The depth is 4.2 cm (1.65″) and this pipe weights 57 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

England, 1950s A Pre-Lane Charatan’s pipe:  the shape, the nomenclature, the logo on the stem testify unambiguously that it was born at Ruben Charatan’s factory.
