CHARATAN’S Make Belvedere 4651X

England, 1960s

A Charatan’s pipe from the “Lane era” (1960 – middle 1970s), the period of the brightest blossoming of this brand, delightful shapes and grains, which eclipsed all others pipe makers including Dunhill. A nicely made Belvedere series pipe of the quite rare diplomat shape!

The pipe markings are “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON ENGLAND \ BELVEDERE”, “4651X”. The length is 13.2 cm (5.2″), bowl’s height is 3.9 cm (1.54″). External diameter of the bowl is 4.9 cm (1.93″), internal diameter is 2.0 cm (0.79″). The depth is 3.3 cm (1.3″) and this pipe weights 57 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

England, 1960-70s The Charatan’s pipe of a quite rare series: the Perfection grade was introduced during the “second Lane era”, 1965-1976 and followed the highly popular and respected Special grade, though production of Perfection pipes seemed to be rather occasional than regular. Interesting that the pipe doesn’t have a shape number: the most probably because…

However, there is already a capital L in a circle (slightly faint, but it is still possible to consider). This isn’t an error: since 1955 the Charatan’s family factory exported…

England, 1960s A great example of the Charatan’s production in 1970-s at Prescott Str. factory! The pipe looks really like a work of art: slightly asymmetric panelled bowl is skilfully combined with an almost the stright grain of briar. It sits in hand very warmly, reliably and trustfully indeed like many free hands can’t sit. Thus no need…

  • MADE BY HAND unsmoked

England, 1960s The stamping “Made by hand in London City” was absolutely typical for the Charatan’s second Lane era (1965 – middle of 1970s) pipes. This unsmoked sample was perhaps predetermined to become at least an upper middle grade pipe, but a couple of scratches (or surface neat cracks?) changed its destiny quite dramatically and…
