England, 1960s
A pleasant Charatan’s make bulldog pipe from the Lane era (1961-1976). The absence of the markings “DC” or “X” after the shape number shouldn’t confuse. During the “family era” shape number was stamped at the left side, together with the brand name, and soon after the acquisition by Dunhill in 1976 the Belvedere series was renamed into “Chippendale” and was produced exclusively for Thinderbox.
The pipe markings are “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON. ENGLAND \ BELVEDERE”, “12”. The length is 14.0 cm (5.51″), bowl’s height is 4.1 cm (1.61″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.8 cm (1.5″), internal diameter is 2.0 cm (0.79″). The depth is 3.4 cm (1.34″) and this pipe weights 32 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. The edging on the bowl had a couple of small chips which were carefully patched. The chamber has been protected with a break-in coat. The stem is newly made from the fresh piece of vulcanite so we can consider the pipe as a “partially unsmoked” :-).
