MADE BY HAND unsmoked

England, 1960s

The stamping “Made by hand in London City” was absolutely typical for the Charatan’s second Lane era (1965 – middle of 1970s) pipes. This unsmoked sample was perhaps predetermined to become at least an upper middle grade pipe, but a couple of scratches (or surface neat cracks?) changed its destiny quite dramatically and it remained preserved until our days as an not completely stamped untouched Charatan’s creature.

The pipe markings are “MADE BY HAND \ IN \ LONDON CITY”. The length is 14.6 cm (6.3″), bowl’s height is 4.9 cm (1.97″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.5 cm (1.65″), internal diameter is 1.8 cm (0.79″). The depth is 4.1 cm (1.57″) and this pipe weights 37 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. The scratches on the bowl are very carefully and reliable patched and passed our stress tests during the renewal.

England, 1950s A pipe of the second Charatan’s higher grade next to the highest “Supreme”. It seems the pipe was made before 1960 – the shape number is located together with the nomenclature on the left side of the shank like it was on “family era” pipes. The encircled “L” is not a misunderstanding –…

  • CHARATAN’S MAKE 91

England, 1950s The stem shape, deep “wild” sandblasted finish and the nomenclature say undoubtedly it’s the family era Charatan’s make pipe from the 1950s. Sandblasting machines were installed at Charatan’s factory after WWII, in the early 1950s most probably. Since the full sandblasting technology was patented by Alfred Dunhill, Charatan’s like many other manufacturers practiced…

  • GBD (Flame Grain) Reject

England A rare, amazing and really lightly smoked example of GBD pipes art before the merge with Comoy’s. It’s difficult to say why the pipe was marked as a “Reject” – except a small darkening on the chamber’s bottom apparently there’s nothing.
