YEllO-BOLE Checker

YEllO-BOLE Checker

USA, 1960s

Given that similar pipes were produced in England under the name Kaywoodie Chessman until the early 1970s, it’s reasonable to assume that this pipe also dates from the late 1950s to early 1970s. It was also likely made in England, as the mouthpiece here features a standard tenon rather than a threaded one.

Strictly speaking, the mouthpiece would have originally had a regular tenon: although the bowl has survived in excellent, unsmoked condition, the mouthpiece did not withstand the passage of time and had to be replaced. This, of course, does not detract from the smoking quality of such a fortunate find.

Pipe markings “YELLO BOLE \ “CHECKER (R) \ IMPORTED BRIAR”
Length 14.6 cm (5.75″)
Bowl Height 4.6 cm (1.81″)
Outside Diameter 3.6 cm (1.42″)
Chamber Diameter 2.1 cm (0.83″)
Chamber Depth 3.7 cm (1.46″)
Weight 34 gr.

Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. The stem is newly made of the fresh piece of vulcanite.

The pipe is not for sale. It was restemmed to order and has already started a new life in a new cozy home.

USA, 1933-36 The series name, The Pocket, reflects the strategic idea behind these pipes, which manufacturers began producing in large numbers in the 1930s-50s.
