L'ANATRA Piuma

L’ANATRA Piuma

Italy, 1990-2000s

The company founded in September 1998 by Massimo Palazzi in Pesaro (almost every pipe smoker heard about this town – as much known as St Claude in Frace). In two years Andrea Pascucci joined the company.

“With both genes of the two pipemakers of “l’Anatra” became to around all the world (particularly Europe, America, Asia). With big satisfaction the 2 pipemakers of l’Anatra remembers New York in 2005 to realize the Pipe of the Year for “Pipes & Tobacco” magazine, for “Accademie Internazionale de la pipa” in 2004, for the German catalogue “Dam Pipe” in 2007…

All L’Anatra pipes are made with briar seasoned for a time of 18 months. Mainly material used for mouthpieces is methacrylate. Massimo and Andrea made 2000 pipes per year with a range from € 80,00 to € 1,500.00 and more. Their grading system are divided in: Rusticated, Partially Rusticated, Sandblaster, Combing Sandblaster, Smooth 1 Egg, 2 Eggs, 3 Eggs (depending on the grain), Straight Grain 1 Egg, 2 Eggs, 3 Eggs (depending on the grain), Nirvana (pipes with virtuous characteristics), Ventura (pipes with small spots of putty)” (Le pipe It).

This pipe is the most probably one of early ones – the logo is simply inlaid into the stem.

The pipe markings are “L’Anatra \ dalle Uova d’Oro \ PIUMA \ HAND MADE IN ITALY”. The length is 14.3 cm (5.63″), bowl’s height is 3.8 cm (1.5″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.7 cm (1.46″), internal diameter is 2.0 cm (0.79″). The depth is 2.9 cm (1.14″) and this pipe weights 35 gr. Briar, acrylic stem, no filter. The surface of the stem has some age related webbing, you may notice it under a bright light.
