CHARATAN'S MAKE Aristocrat 61

CHARATAN’S MAKE Aristocrat 61

England, 1950s

This pipe clearly dates from the final years of Charatan’s “family” period: the shape number still appears on the same side as the rest of the nomenclature, and the circled “L” began to appear on Charatan’s pipes shortly before the company was acquired by Herman Lane, primarily on products exported to the USA.

However, the “ARISTOCRAT” stamping seems somewhat out of place here. None of the reliable sources mention such a line under Charatan’s branding—most “Aristocrats” turn out to be products of the John Redman factory, and some by Willard. Furthermore, the font used for the inscription doesn’t match traditional Charatan markings from either the Lane period or earlier: the letters O and C typically formed near-perfect circles, while here they appear noticeably narrower.

So, we’re left with an intriguing subject for discussion.
