CASSANO 957

Italy

An Italian “electrical pipe” inspired by St Claude!

Gerolamo Ceresa began at the end of the XIX century as a subcontractor for Rossi Factory (Barasso), but soon (1919) he founded new own very modern operated electrically (!) factory under the name “Gerolamo Ceresa – Fabbrica elettrica pipe”. That was a real break through at that time! Enrico Ceresa, son of Gerolamo went for a few years to St Claude to learn procedures and secrets of French manufacturers and after hes return the company started with own brand and the new name “Fabbrica Pipe Cassano”.

The key factors of success were modern production, a really good quality for reasonable prices, imported Brazilian horn (one of the best!) for mouthpieces and a number of successful export contracts, where the most important countries were USA, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Germany, Hungary and even England.

Currently “Fabbrica Pipe di Carlo Ceresa & C.” is managed by Carlo Ceresa, son of Enrico.

The pipe marking is “CASSANO”, “957 \ MADE IN ITALY”. The length is 16.5 cm (6.5″), bowl’s height is 5.2 cm (2.05″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.9 cm (1.54″), internal diameter is 2.1 cm (0.83″). The depth is 4.6 cm (1.81″) and this pipe weights 42 gr. Briar, acrylic stem, no filter. The stem has already some noticeable age related webbing.

England, 1983 Year 1983. USSR has stuck in Afganistan. UK fights for Maldives. USSR immediately bans all Pink Floyd discs. “Apple” gets a new top manager (Mr. Scully from Pepsi). Authors…

  • CHACOM Lupenrein 309

France “Lupenrein” is a German word meaning “flawless”, “perfect”, “clean” (f.e. “clean diamond”) and we really couldn’t identify any issues with briar. Also interesting that the number 309 for such canadian shape pipes was widely used by Comoy’s during its best times and we suspect even refined experts couldn’t distinguish the pipe and English made…

England, 1980s Here we see the exact same stamp, in the same font, as on other early Bill Ashton-Taylor pipes, carved at the beginning of his solo career in the early 1980s. Interestingly, this pipe is adapted to accommodate a 6mm filter — a rather rare feature for Ashton-Taylor’s work. Perhaps it was made to…
