HARDCASTLE Special Quality bulldog

HARDCASTLE Special Quality bulldog

England, 1946-67

Recently we represented a pipe of a very similar design stamped “MADE IN LONDON \ ENGLAND” and classified it as an unmarked Hardcastle bulldog. Now we have the pipe which confirms our assumption – the same approach, similar shape, finish and even location of the stamping.

So, here’s another one “transition time” Hardcastle’s sandblasted bulldog from the early “”Dunhill” era of the Hardcastle’s history, it was born in the period from 1946 for 1967, i.e. at the time of a harmonious merge of “family” technologies and “Dunhill” management and before merge with Parker under the Parker-Hardcastle brand.

The pipe marking is “SPECIAL QUALITY \BY HARDCASTLE\ MADE IN LONDON \ ENGLAND”. The length is 14.1 cm (5.55″), the bowl’s height is 4.4 cm (1.73″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.9 cm (1.54″), internal diameter is 1.8 cm (0.71″). The depth is 3.5 cm (1.38″) and this pipe weights 38 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

England We have carefully examined all our records and found only one manufacturer with the exactly such COM (Country of Manufacturing) stamping where the letter E in “England” is placed below the DE in “Made”. England, 1930s The stamping “BRITISH MADE” clearly indicates that this pipe was produced during the Hardcastle family’s ownership of the company, prior to Alfred Dunhill’s complete acquisition in 1948. Given that Hardcastle’s factory was unable to obtain briar during WWII, it is most likely that the pipe dates back to the 1930s. The tenon is…
