PIPES

  • G. W. SIMS

    G. W. SIMS

    $100.00

As Pipedia notes, “G.W. Sims was one of the few English pipe makers who produced Danish style freehands carved from specially selected plateau briar. Mr. Sims willingly made pipes to personal specifications”.

Today, we have the pleasure of presenting an example of just such work by the former Charatan’s carver and later an independent London artisan. Everything is as promised — both Danish style and plateau briar. It is also evident that the customer appreciated the pipe, as it shows signs of having been smoked very carefully and with affection.

  • GBD New Era 508

    GBD New Era 508 unsmoked

    $140.00

The New Era series has been a constant presence in catalogs and guides from at least the 1930s through the 1970s, during the most respected periods of the company’s history. Over the years, New Era pipes were positioned either among the top grades or in a segment well above average, meaning they were never considered simple, inexpensive working tools. It was therefore especially pleasant to find a pipe from this series in an unsmoked condition.

  • GENOD 605

    GENOD 605

    $75.00

Imagine a monastery, isolated from the world somewhere deep in the mountains or in a forest. Time passes, yet old books and ancient ceremonies are preserved here, and a language no longer spoken in the outside world still resonates within these walls.

Similarly, the Genod brand represents a separate and very old branch of the French Comoy tradition that remained in St-Claude while the main company migrated, changed owners, and merged. The oldest Comoy workshop, known as Comoy-David, was renamed Genod only in the 1970s.

As indicated by the marking, this particular pipe was made to order by Iwan Ries & Co., the renowned American tobacconist from Chicago.

  • PARKER Bruyere 374

    PARKER Bruyere 374

    $60.00

A worthy representative of the Dunhill family — a stylish, practical, and well-preserved bulldog, born in the Parker-Hardcastle house after 1967. A solid, reliable smoker, and one we can confidently recommend.

  • BJARNE NIELSEN Viking Classic

    BJARNE NIELSEN Viking Classic

    $64.00

A pipe made by Bjarne Nielsen (1941–2008), an outstanding Danish master and professional diplomat.

Many pipe makers came from various backgrounds — engineers, telecommunication technicians, blacksmiths, and so on. However, it was highly unexpected for a diplomat working at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to enter this field.

During the 1960s and ’70s, demand for Danish pipes was extremely high, and even diplomats were called upon to support pipe makers internationally. With all established makers overloaded with orders, Bjarne began offering his own pipes, and what started as a hobby soon became the work of his life.

  • ROCHE BRIAR

    Roche Briar

    $58.00

Experts at Smokingpipes.com suggest that Roche Briar is one of the many sub-brands produced by Savinelli, pointing to the similarity of shapes and the instantly recognizable rustication style. We also had the impression that today’s Roche piece and the pre-1970 Savinelli Capri Root Briar from our own archives are very close relatives, so the assumption is most likely correct. The condition of this pipe is excellent, and we can safely recommend it.

  • KAYWOODIE Ruf-Tone

    KAYWOODIE Ruf-Tone

    $59.00

American artisans from Kaywoodie have always delighted collectors with a generous variety of shapes and finishes — sometimes simply pleasant and utilitarian, sometimes extremely apt and thoughtful. And, of course, our today’s Ruf-Tone belongs to such the brightest and most successful: the artificially aged, contrasting finish combined with deep rustication is literally mesmerizing, and the carefully chosen shapes create the illusion of a deep-sea monster… or a creature from deep space.

The aluminum stinger with three holes and the logo application on the mouthpiece hint that this pipe was made at the end of the last century, most likely in the 1980s. This assumption is also confirmed by our sources: the Ruf-Tone series was launched in 1977.

  • VAUEN Dr Perl McRooty 9

    VAUEN Dr Perl McRooty 9

    $64.00

The VAUEN company’s history spans 177 years, making it one of the oldest European manufacturers still in operation. The birth of the VAUEN Dr. Perl brand dates back to 1921, a hazy era whose documents are inaccessible to us due to the bombing of Nuremberg, during which the company’s archives were destroyed. However, we believe we can confidently state that today’s pipe is already an example of post-World War II production, as evidenced by its overall condition, markings, and not too conservative shape: solid and precise German craftsmanship, always appreciated.

  • AMPHORA X-tra 728-648

    AMPHORA X-tra 729-649

    $48.00

A vivid and elegant example of cooperation between two good old Dutch companies:

Douwe Egberts, the grocery giant which, since 1753, has supplied Dutch and international consumers with tea, coffee, and fine tobaccos — most notably Amphora, a blend popular not only in the Netherlands but also overseas.

Elbert Gubbels & Sons B.V., established in 1870 (and since 1972 also known as The Royal Dutch Pipe Factory) — the home of Big Ben, Bugatti, Hilson, Porsche Design pipes, and of course, Amphora.

We would date today’s pipe to the 1960s, based on its design, overall condition, and stamping.

Interestingly, the later history of both Amphora brands turned out to be quite eventful. Douwe Egberts’ tobacco division was sold to Imperial Tobacco in 1988, and in 2015 it passed to the Danish company Mac Baren, which — judging by feedback from both casual smokers and experts — breathed new life into Amphora.
Elbert Gubbels & Sons B.V. went bankrupt in 2012, but the production of Amphora pipes was taken over by Dr. Grabow — now offering new and interesting shapes, though naturally without the traditional ‘Holland’ stamping.

  • Mario Grandi pipe

    Mario Grandi

    $125.00

Mario Grandi is not a real person. Mario Grandi is a brand name, or, to be more exact, a sub brand name related to Mastro Beraldi. At the same time Mastro Beraldi is not a real person either. The real name of a real person (and the very hardworking pipe carer!) who stands behind all those names is Aldo Pierluigi. He started carving pipes in the 1970s, all pipes are made from the best Italian briar, all bowls are carved and finished by hand, no templates. Most of the modern pipes from Aldo are marked “Mastro Beraldi”, pipes with Per Imei Amici (“for my friends”) nomenclature are made for friends and the best customers.
