Barling family-era pipes are a pleasure to work with, not only because they are highly sought after by collectors, but also because they are incredibly durable. The mouthpiece may already be bitten, the markings worn off, and the top of the bowl nicked from being knocked against a heel (a habit, unfortunately, common among gentlemen of that era), but the briar itself remains as sturdy, resonant, and reliable as it was from the beginning.
We do not claim to be absolute experts, but in our opinion, the briar of this Barling’s Make pipe from the 1950s closely resembles that of other pipes from the same era marked “Algerian Briar”. This beauty has truly had a rough life—the markings are not in perfect condition, and the mouthpiece, even if it was made as a replacement, is hardly much younger than the bowl itself, bearing slightly visible traces of scratches. But the briar is precisely that legendary Barling briar.

Le pipe dell’epoca della famiglia Barling sono un piacere con cui lavorare, non solo perché sono molto ricercate dai collezionisti, ma anche perché sono incredibilmente resistenti. Il bocchino può essere già segnato dai morsi, le marcature possono essersi consumate, e la sommità della testa può presentare piccole scheggiature dovute ai colpi contro il tallone (un’abitudine, purtroppo, comune tra i gentiluomini di quell’epoca), ma la radica rimane solida, sonora e affidabile come il primo giorno.
Non pretendiamo di essere assoluti esperti, ma a nostro avviso la radica di questa Barling’s Make degli anni ’50 assomiglia molto a quella di altre pipe dello stesso periodo contrassegnate come “Algerian Briar”. Questa bellezza ha davvero avuto una vita difficile: le marcature non sono in perfette condizioni e il bocchino, anche se probabilmente sostitutivo, difficilmente è molto più recente della testa stessa, presentando lievi tracce di graffi. Ma la radica è proprio quella leggendaria Barling.
