By a fortunate coincidence, William John Ashton-Taylor was born in 1945 in a house next to Alfred Dunhill’s factory. It seemed like only a matter of time before he would become an apprentice in a factory at the age of 14 (Bill was still in school). Over the next quarter-century, Bill climbed through the ranks of the company, eventually reaching quality control and management positions. In 1980, Bill opened his own pipe repair shop and began crafting pieces for London companies. And very soon, in 1983, the world-famous sparkling Ashton appeared.

This pipe is one of the first pipes Bill Ashton-Taylor made after leaving Dunhill. Today “Taylor Made” is an Ashton second and these pipes bear the stampings “Taylor Made by Ashton”.

Per una fortunata coincidenza, William John Ashton-Taylor è nato nel 1945 in una casa vicino alla fabbrica di Alfred Dunhill. In the 1930th the fisher and in combination – the chief physician of Chicago, doctor Paul E. Grabov liked to sit smoking pipes with the owner of a drugstore and the same inveterate fisher Mr. Brown. Sometimes they were also adjoined by Mr. Louis Linkman, the owner of the tobacco company of the same name and pipe factory right there in Chicago. In one of such evenings Mr. Linkman asked whether Dr. Grabow agrees if Linkman calls by his name an essentially new, innovative series of pipes. The physician caught “such a huuuuuge perch” yesterday and of course agreed. And soon “Doctor Grabov” pipes blew up the North American market. This agreement wasn’t anywhere recorded, and doctor Grabov didn’t receive any royalty. But Linkman’s company supplied him with pipes until the end of his life, and the doctor participated with pleasure in development of new models.Before Dr. Grabow, Linkman's pipes were named in honor of the owner’s mother: M.L.C. – “Mary Linkman & Co”. This pipe hails from a highly respected and conservative English family manufacturer, Blakemar. The brand is named after the village of Blakesley and Thomas Martin, who established the company in 1890. Over time, management passed down to Thomas' son, Richard Martin, and then to Richard's nephew, Michael Billington. Despite these changes and relocating production to Litchborough, the company remained true to its policy of conservative evolution, occasionally introducing new shapes or 9 mm filters while still preserving the same quality pipes that have been produced since 1890. As noted by Pipedia, these pipes are a true joy to behold and smoke.The featured pipe is an excellent example of Blakemar's production.
