STANWELL Old Briar 506

Denmark, 1950s

The Danish pipe from the most famous Stanwell period. The registration number was obtained by the company in 1948 and Stanwell pipes were stamped with it until the early 1970’s. Absence of the crown over the “S” on the stem prompt that the pipe was made still before the 1960s. The pipe is very rare, no available shape charts mention the number 506. However this shape is very similar to the shape nr. 6 – Dublin style designed by Sixten Ivarsson in 1951. Perhaps it’s a variation of the original shape?

The pipe markings are “STANWELL \ REGD.No.969-48 \ OLD BRIAR”, “506”. The length is 12.6 cm (4.96″), bowl’s height is 5.0 cm (1.97″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.3 cm (1.3″), internal diameter is 2.1 cm (0.83″). The depth is 4.1 cm (1.61″) and this pipe weights 25 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

Denmark Dating of pipes (except Dunhill) is both entertaining, puzzling and inexact process.
