JOHN REDMAN Redman’s Royal (Conway Supreme) 122

England

According to many respectable sources such as pipephil and pipedia Conway pipes were made “most probably” by Singleton & Cole. But we may suppose the company had also close relationships with John Redman factory and even identical series: you have seen probably Conway’s Aristocrat pipes which are very and very similar to John Redman’s high grade Aristocrat products. And this top grade Redman’s Royal pipe is also stamped “Conways Supreme” thus at least we may claim both brands had the same source.

The pipe marking is “REDMAN’S ROYAL\ LONDON MADE”, “122”, “CONWAY SUPREME \ MADE IN ENGLAND”. The length is 14.1 cm (5.55″), the bowl’s height is 4.0 cm (1.57″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.9 cm (1.54″), internal diameter is 1.8 cm (0.71″). The depth is 3.0 cm (1.18″) and this pipe weights 38 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, aluminium air cooler. The chamber has normal smoked wear not excluding some roughness, but without any critical issues. We noticed a very small (less that a millimeter) gap between the shank and the stem, but the stem sits absolutely reliably so there were no reasons to correct that. The pipe comes with the original John Redman pipe sleeve.

England A pretty nice, moderately smoked and unusually balanced Redman’s middle size and middle grade billiard approximately from 1960-70’s. The shape with such a proportion of the stummel and the stem looks a bit provocative, but in fact many Redman pipes were made in very provocative shapes and finishes at that time.

  • JOHN REDMAN Brixton 910

England A very interesting finding: the Brixton series is not represented in available Redman’s catalogues. The pipe was made in the 1960-70s the most probably: the stamping “John Redman” (in script) is not typical for early Redman products. Also we’d like to draw your attention to the shape: it’s not a simple bent pipe, but…
