JAMES UPSHALL Tilshead tall bent

England, 1978-84

It seems to be one of the early pipes made under the James Upshall roof by Barry Jones, former top carver at Charatan’s. The company was founded in 1978, prior to 1996 Tilshead pipes had no logo on the stem and no size designations. Also after 1984 Upshall acquired a pantograph from the Sasieni factory that had just closed, therefore from then on the marks were “engraved”. So the pipe is the most probably made between 1978 and 1984.

A very lightly smoked, perfectly preserved samle of the pipe carving art with eye-catching grain and unique tall-bowl bent shape! Sincerely recommended!

The pipe marking is “TILSHEAD | ENGLAND”, “MADE BY HAND”. The length is 12.8 cm (5.04″), bowl’s height is 5.5 cm (2.16″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.2 cm (1.26″), internal diameter is 2.0 cm (0.79″). The depth is 4.8 cm (1.89″) and this pipe weights 33 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.
