There is a quite frequent and contradictory practice when capable and professional specialists are promoted to manager’s positions. Nobody knows whether a promoted engineer will be a good manager. But he definitely won’t be as good specialist as before.

Erik Nording was an engineer too. And he managed to prove that:

  1. An engineer can become a great pipe carver, what is very natural from our point of view.
  2. A pipe carver can become a good manager, what is not a natural consequence. Hence the Nording pipe company has a great management – at least we can judge from their production volumes.

On the other hand this situation follows to some misunderstanding: there are pipes made by made by Erik Nording pipe company and there are exclusive pipes made by Erik Nording personally. For example our today’s pipe has been marked “Hand made by Erik Nording”.

The pipe is marked in line with the old Nording’s grading system 200 to 600, where 600 series was the highest grade. It’s hardly possible to say exactly about its production date but we guess our approximation 1960 – 1980 would be correct enough.

The pipe markings are “HAND MADE \ BY \ ERIK NØRDING”, “591”. The length is 15.0 cm, bowl’s hight is 3.9 cm. External and internal diameters of the bowl are 4.3 cm and 2.0 cm. The depth is 3.4 cm and this pipe weights 42 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. There’s a small light and hardly visible scratch on the collar. The chamber has been protected with a break in paste. The pipe comes with the box and sleeve.

Denmark, 1970s The pipe was most probably made in 1970s. There were many legendary pipe carvers working for W.Ø. Larsen and it’s usually difficult to say who exactly made a specific pipe. In this case we can guess that our today’s pipe was made by Jess Chonowitch, you can compare with other his pipes and…

  • GBD International 1626

England We suspect that GBD was a pipe maker with the best protection against an industrial espionage. Hundreds of shapes (changed every year), production on both sides of the Channel, lack of accurate dating of pipes could dement any James Bond who attempted to steal even a trifling secret.

  • BEN WADE Hand Model

England, 1960s A great example of the Charatan’s production in 1970-s at Prescott Str. factory! The pipe looks really like a work of art: slightly asymmetric panelled bowl is skilfully combined with an almost the stright grain of briar. It sits in hand very warmly, reliably and trustfully indeed like many free hands can’t sit. Thus no need…

  • NØRDING hunter pipe 2012

Denmark Erik Nording is not only a great pipe maker (as well as the production manager and pipe seller of course :-)) but also a very enthusiastic hunter. Therefore every year since 1995 he produces a pipe inspired by a wild animal under the common name “Hunter pipes”. With help of Danish artist Mogens Andersen…
