COMOY'S St James 55

COMOY’S St James 55

England

How many St. James’ are in England? Well, Wikipedia lists 55 cathedrals, chapels and other cult buildings. At least one is located in Scotland and a number on all corners of the world, including Herzegovina, Barbados and other exotic countries.

However for Comoy’s with its tradition of “sea” brands (such as Blue Riband) the most interesting St. James could be the HMS St. James (D65), a Battle-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy, commissioned in 1946 and broken up in 1961.

Perhaps such a short operation period caused not very long production of Comoy’s St. James pipes. They are quite rare now and really respected by collectors due to a variety of markings and logos applied on them. Our one has got only one metallic stripe on a stem (Guildhalls have 3 stripes). Should that mean a military rank?

The pipe markings are “ST JAMES \ LONDON MADE”, “MADE IN ENGLAND \ By \ COMOY’S”, “55”. The length is 13.3 cm, bowl’s hight is 4.8 cm. External and internal diameters of the bowl are 3.1 cm and 1.9 cm. The depth is 3.4 cm and this pipe weights 22 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

England Smoking process -if it goes correctly – is slow and almost static. Therefore probably “the animal subject” in marking of pipes is very moderate and conservative. There’s of course such extreme shape as a “cobra” (very effectively implemented by Gasparini). There’s Falcon, there is a number of sparrows, roosters, geese and owls. You can…
