Colonel Henry Fraser Lovat (France)

Colonel Henry Fraser Lovat (France)

France

Long time ago, when we began our project we restored and published here a Colonel Henry Fraser lovat pipe.

The pipe was lucky indeed. It was the firts pipe we have sold abroad, many people are still looking for this classical lovat at our site and search engines know that lovat requests should be forwarded to www.vkpipes.com.

So it was a question of honor to replenish our store with some more lovats and to update our information about this pipe.

The lovat shape was initiated in early XX century and they say Colonel Henry Fraser, Lord Lovat smoked such pipes so the name was adopted in his honour. Several sources of information state that Gerald Grundging & Company stamped the name of Lord Lovat on the pipes of this shape. Another sources claim that BBB invented lovat pipes and produced lovats both in the UK and France. It’s easy to believe: BBB was integrated with A. Oppenheimer & Co. Ltd in 1920s with production facilities in both countries.

The pipe markings are “COLONEL HENRY FRASER \ LOVAT \ MADE IN FRANCE”. The length is 12.3 cm, bowl’s hight is 4.5 cm. External and internal diameters of the bowl are 2.9 cm and 1.8 cm. The depth is 3.7 cm and this pipe weights 30 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. The chamber has been protected with the break in paste.

France, 1930s Even if we do not know the exact year this pipe was made, based on its markings and historical context, we can reasonably place it at the very end of the 1930s or, at the latest, 1940. The year 1940 was tragic for France. The country attempted to resist the German invasion but…

  • VUILLARD Aristocrat

France Aristocrat is a very lucky name for a pipe. The most known are Aristocrats made by John Redman factory in London for export. • TOULOUSE

France It’s unlikely we’ll tell you a long story about this pipe, other than to say that it’s a solid and attractive piece crafted by the artisans of one of France’s leading pipe-making workshops. Butz-Choquin currently uses the name Toulouse quite frequently, though their shape number 451 is more or less a classic bent, while…
