CHARATAN’S MAKE Distinction

Distinction was one of the most successful and valued lines of Charatan’s pipes from the “first Lane era” (1961-95). These years the old good Charatan’s family manufactory turned into the brightest star of the pipe making by means of new investments, a successful management and a creative approach of the Charatan’s artisans. There’s no shape number on the pipe: it was made by one of the leading carvers at this factory regardless any catalogues.

The pipe markings are “”(L)”, “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON. ENGLAND \ DISTINCTION”, “MADE BY HAND”. The length is 15.0 cm, bowl’s hight is 5.2 cm. External diameter of the bowl is 4.2 cm, internal diameter is 2.1 cm. The depth is 4.5 cm and this pipe weights 51 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter. The chamber has been protected with a break-in coat.

England, 1960s The pipe seems to be one of the very first Lane era sandblasted pipes: despite the “Lane” stamping (a shape number with the “X”) the deep and “wild” sandblasted finish is rather specific for family era production. The shape (such a bent stack) is very rare and was named “Burlington” in shape charts.
