CHARATAN'S Make Distinction panelled

CHARATAN’S Make Distinction panelled

England, 1960s

A Charatan’s pipe of “the second Lane era” (1965-76), the period of the brightest blossoming of this brand, delightful shapes and grains, which eclipsed all others pipe makers including Dunhill. There’s no shape number on the pipe, thus it was made by one of the leading carvers at this factory regardless any catalogues. A very interesting sample from Charatan’s artisans!

The pipe markings are “CHARATAN’S MAKE \ LONDON. ENGLAND \ DISTINCTION”, “Made By Hand \ in \ City of London”, (L)”, “Extra Large”. The length is 15.4 cm (6.06″), bowl’s height is 5.6 cm (2.2″). External diameter of the bowl is 3.9 x 4.3 cm (1.54 x 1.69″), internal diameter is 2.2 cm (0.87″). The depth is 4.3 cm (1.69″) and this pipe weights 57 gr. Briar, vulcanite stem, no filter.

The pipe looks really like a work of art: slightly asymmetric panelled bowl is skilfully combined with an almost the stright grain of briar. It sits in hand very warmly, reliably and trustfully indeed like many free hands can’t sit. Thus no need…
